Materials scale with volume (tonnage), not face — this is the one place wall thickness matters. Enter core volume (face area × thickness) and a $/ft³ that reflects your stone. Kept separate so it never bends the labor rate.

How the Stone Wall Cost Calculator works

Stonework is priced by the square foot of wall face, not by volume — the labor is in dressing and setting the visible face, so that is what you measure. This calculator uses the face-area method: weight each face by type (dry-laid, mortared, or hidden) and quality, derive a base rate per weighted square foot from a finished job's actual cost, then reuse that rate to estimate new work.

  1. Set your type weights

    Weights capture relative labor per square foot of face. Hidden/back faces are the baseline (1×); visible mortared face is heavier; visible dry-laid stone is heaviest. Keep them fixed across jobs for consistency.

  2. Calibrate from a finished job

    On the Calibrate tab, enter the faces you built and the total labor cost. The tool backs out a base rate per weighted square foot — your reusable deliverable.

  3. Estimate the next job at that rate

    Switch to the Estimate tab, enter the new job's faces, and it prices them at the carried rate. Override the rate anytime; add mobilization and materials as separate lines.

Frequently asked questions

How is a stone wall priced — by area or by volume?
By the square foot of finished face. The cost of a stone wall is dominated by labor spent shaping and setting the visible face, so estimators measure face area rather than the wall's cubic volume. Materials (tonnage) are figured separately.
Why weight dry stone more than mortared stone?
Dry-laid (dry-stack) stone has to fit and lock together without mortar, so each stone is shaped and placed more carefully. That extra handling makes visible dry stone the most labor-intensive face per square foot, which is why it carries the highest weight.
What does calibrating a rate mean?
It means dividing a finished job's known labor cost by its total weighted face area to get a dollars-per-weighted-square-foot rate. Because it comes from your own completed work, that rate reflects your crew's real pace and can be reused to price future jobs.
